Weekly Blog - Sept. 17, 2010

Well, it is truely amazing how quickly a week zips by.  This week I thought I'd address a question I've received a number of times, "What can I do as a new artist to learn how to paint?"

The best way, and the way I started painting, was by watching some great artists on their instructional videos on PBS.  The very first art show I watched was "The Joy of Painting" with the late great Bob Ross, an inspirational oil painter who believed everybody could do it, and he spent many shows instructing people to become painters.  I first learned the wet on wet oil technique by watching his show.  I later became interested in acrylic painting by watching Jerry Yarnell on PBS, who is a great instructor of acrylics.  You can also get books from your local library with many techniques and tips.  There are also great instructors in many towns and cities, but you will pay for this instruction.

No matter how you first learn the only real way to learn is to pick up the brushes and paint, paint, paint.  Through repetition, you will develop and refine your techniques and get better with every piece you create.

So what are you waiting for?  Painting is fun, inspirational, and provides an amazing sense of pride when you complete a piece.

Keep it Real!
